The Massachusetts Vacation Mega Post

Posted on by Dad

Last week, Avery visited Massachusetts for the first time, spending time in West Boylston, Leominster, Brockton, Plymouth, and East Bridgewater. It was a whirlwind vacation and by the time we boarded the plane to come back to Phoenix, Avery had been hugged, kissed, held, fed, and played with more than most kids are in a year.

Here are some photos from the trip. Click any photo to view a larger version.

More crawling

Posted on by Dad

The previous video of Avery crawling was her most-watched clip ever, so I thought I’d take a couple more.

This first one was taken just after a projectile-barf. Even though I cleaned it thoroughly, Eli makes an appearance halfway through to finish the job on a molecular level. He’s here to help, folks…

After a bit of crawling, Avery started climbing on me, so I help her up. Assisted standing is one of Avery’s favorite activities.

This second one highlights Avery’s tenuous love/hate relationship with door stoppers. Since learning to crawl, she’s found that they can be a source of great delight if flicked just so or they can be a loud, snapping, and gyrating horror show if a heavy hand is used. If you turn your speakers up loud enough, you’ll hear that Avery is bending the door stopper ever-so-slightly to get a little rattle going, but not so much as to scare herself.

Nine month checkup

Posted on by Dad

Well, it was back to the doctor’s office today for the nine month checkup. Avery’s doing great. She’s 21 lbs., 7 oz. and stands 28 inches tall. This puts her in the 86th and 54th percentiles, respectively. Her head circumference is in the 50th percentile.

All her activity and motor skills are right where they should be. The doctor commented at how bright-eyed and alert she was. In the coming months we need to increase the solid food a bit and decrease the amount of formula she has – including the freebie bottle she gets in the middle of the night when she wakes up crying. Going forward, we need to let her cry it out and make her sleep through the night. Neither Mom or I were terribly upset to hear this. Avery’s sure to be another story.

Avery’s got a little residual fluid in her ears from a recent ear infection, but that will clear up soon. And, since she’s up on her shots and looking good, we shouldn’t be returning to the doctor until her first birthday in a few months. Can’t wait to see what we learn then.

The doctor was late for our appointment, so we had plenty of time for examination room exploration. I took some video of Avery crawling and a handful of photos once the exam started. She finally got her arms and shoulders to cooperate when she wants to go somewhere, so she’s a speed demon now. Mom, Dad, Kelsey, and the pets are all on high alert when Avery decides she’s taking off. The top item on this weekend’s agenda is childproofing the house.

Settling in to watch the game

Avery’s new friend Avery

Posted on by Mom

Each morning before Dad takes over Avery hangs out with me in the bathroom while I get ready for work. She typically just rolls around on the tile and chews on Eli’s ear. But just this week she finally met the little girl who lives in my closet and her name is Avery too! She stares at Avery right before she launches head first at her. Good thing the Avery girls both have hard heads.

After work playtime

Posted on by Dad

When I work from home, it’s hard not to get distracted waiting for the end of the day. Sometime between 4:30 and 5:00, my office gets transformed into a playroom. Furniture is pushed back and laptops turned off. Toys are spilled all over the floor. If I play my cards right, the Red Sox game stays on the TV.

Everybody gets on the floor (well, just me, since the dogs and Avery are already there). We play, roll around, and laugh until about 6:30 when the pre-bedtime routine begins: veggies, bath, and bottle.

Avery’s quasi-crawling now. The back legs are on board, the arms and shoulders less so. She has no shortage of toys, but remote controls are her favorite thing, so she has one of her own. When you turn her loose, she heads straight for something dangerous or something fragile. She knows her name and I’m pretty sure she knows I’m saying ‘no’, but she laughs and goes for it anyway. It’s impossible to keep from smiling.

I took this photo today. Don’t let appearances fool you. Avery’s all smiles and crawling to Dad – but only because she sees his big, shiny camera. And she’s not taking ‘no’ for an answer.

Peakaboo… and, she’s exhausted

On Saturday, we were up early to go to the doctor’s office for Avery’s latest round of shots. After two hours of waiting (long story) and all the drama/tragedy that goes with kids getting shots, we decided to stop for an early lunch on the way home.

Avery was a sport all through the morning and the meal, but eventually it was too much and she needed recharging. Once the eye-rubbing begins the only cure is a long nap.

We quickly paid the bill and headed for home. Not long after leaving the parking lot, Avery was asleep.

A Ladies Lunch

Posted on by Mom

I had a brunch planned this past weekend to catch up with my friends Marion, Darlene and Lisa and Avery wanted to come too. She was so upset the entire ride into Scottsdale but perked right up when she got inside the restaurant. She ate her lunch right beside her new lady friends and seemed to fit right in. She didn’t mind getting tossed from one set of open arms to the next and felt completely comfortable taking a post-brunch snooze on my friend Marion. She can’t wait until the next Ladies Lunch…
